Has anyone seen anything recently where external users cannot create Microsoft accounts with their work email addresses? How in the world is external sharing supposed to work if they cannot do that and they are not Office customers? We would have no idea what address to send the invite to and you're asking business users to create a completely personal account to access business content from your organization? Maybe I'm not understanding this correctly. I hope I'm not, but if this is the case external sharing in Office just become worthless, unless you're only working with other Office customers.
Why would I have so many external users with work email addresses in my admin portal? They weren't all created more than 2 years ago. It's totally unsustainable to create external IDs for each external user. IT would be a huge bottleneck. Maybe it has been like this all along as I don't have another work address to test with.
I typically send to some test gmail accounts I have. I just don't even know what the workflow would be to give an external user access to an Office group now if they aren't on Office This may very well be a good solution for us not perfect, but has still not yet hit our tenant and I have no idea when it will. When it comes to external sharing, there are two "buckets" of sharing that users can use today. First, you can share a site, add a user to an O group or directly add the user to the directory.
All of these use AAD B2B as the underlying method of "invitation" and result in the targeted user having an account created in your directory. This does not require the user to create an account in your directory and relies on using a one time passcode to verify that the user owns the e-mail address that you shared to.
And, as always, there's more improvements coming here in the future. Let me know if you have any other questions! It will not apply to the sharing of sites though. For those, it will continue to go through the legacy sharing invitations. Thanks for the response. I don't think Microsoft support has a clear understanding of these concepts as they had a really difficult time describing the correct behavior and it was clear they were not sure themselves. I have verified that secure external sharing is in our tenant as well.

While trying to give access to new external users mostly aged ones who don't have a Microsoft account, find it difficult to first create a MS account, then get the credentials to log in to my site.
How can I help them avoid this? Or when adding a new external usercan I ask for their details there which helps it to automatically create the account and then just share the credentials with the user? You can't, that is the auth flow you have to work with. You either share externally and they have to use an existing O account or Microsoft account to log in, or you give them credentials in your domain and license them.
I think most would agree, letting Microsoft deal with the credentialing process of users not in your business is a much better trade off than managing user credentials and associated O license, not matter the slight inconvenience a first time user has to deal with. I thougth that the only thing they have to do is to create a Microsoft Account with their mail address but in some cases they cant. If they click on "Cant Access your account", system tells then that the user id doesnt exist. Use a personal email, such as Gmail or Yahoo! Cleaning up the Azure AD and Microsoft account overlap. We would like to allow people to access with their professional accounts and not to force them to create new Microsoft accounts neither use their personal accounts. Every time they share a site it prompts the user to make a microsoft account - even though all the sites are setup for anonymous external access.
Your client should have an option to create a sharing link that doesn't require the user to log in. Well, trying to add a screenshot and getting some kind of error. I have found SharePoint to be awful at doing anything without creating a MS account. As I have followed the attached link to the letter and it still seems not to work.
We just ask outside people to set up a Microsoft account, it makes it easier if you are sharing a document library, or want to refine permissions for them. Is adding them to the address book really the only way to do this? Create an Asp. In our Sharing settings in the admin centre, there is no expiry limit set. Does this mean the links will never expire? This may be the most convenient but might not be within out policies.
